Domaine Benastra is situated in the Roussillon region in the south of France, near St Paul de Fenouillet, in the Agly valley.
Gifted young winemaker Joseph Paillé started to work in his family’s vineyards at the age of 13 whilst still at school. After working in the Roussillon, Burgundy, Canada and then Virginia, USA, he returned home to France where he helped to establish the now internationally renowned Loire estate of Pithon Paillé. Joseph is steadily building a reputation for wines that demonstrate the vitality and individuality that this vineyard region is able to produce when in the right hands.Domaine Benastra is being restructured and is in the process of converting to organic practices.
‘La Petite Soeur’ is a fruit forward cuvée, from the appellation of Côtes du Roussillon. It is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Lledoner Pelut and a little Carignan.
Benastra Rouge, Côtes du Roussillon Villages is made from Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Grenache from vines grown on schiste at approximately 250m in altitude and vines at 650m on granite.
All the grapes are handpicked. Vinification is with indigenous yeasts and with minimum SO2 added.
Also spelt or known as Lladoner Pelud, the downy leaved variant of Grenache and known as Grenache Poilu, in the south of France. Both wine and vine closely resemble Grenache Noir but is less susceptible to coulure and therefore yields more consistently and usefully reaches physiological ripeness and lower sugar levels.
